Lesson Summary:
The lesson introduces the children to the use of parenthesis in math calculations. This is the first step in learning to order math operations. The discussion is designed for either paired or individual reading. Activity A is an exercise in using brackets in calculations. Activity B is the same exercise in reverse, requiring the children to identify the numbers which should be bracketed. Activity C gives them the opportunity to solve a word problem using parentheses.

Lesson Excerpt:
Parentheses, or brackets, are used in language and in math. In language they are used to add an extra comment or piece of information into a sentence. In math they are used to show which mathematical operation, or action must be carried out first.
It is a bit like a recipe. If mom makes a cake the recipe will probably ask her to mix the eggs and butter together first and then add the flour. If she does it the other way around the mixture will probably be lumpy and the cake won’t turn out right. In the same way if you don’t work out the numbers in the brackets first, the answer will be wrong.
