Do you remember being asked questions like that when you were little? You’ve known your numbers since before you started kindergarten. But did you realize that four isn’t always four? It could also be forty, or four hundred, or four thousand, it just depends on where it is placed.
In this number – 42 – the four is worth 40 because it is in the ten’s place. It tells you that there are four tens. The two is in the unit’s (one’s) place. It tells you there are 2 units.
Place value is one of the most important things we can learn in math.
