Lesson Excerpt:

Because it is about the same size, mass and density as the earth, Venus is often called our sister planet.  It is the second-closest planet to the sun, the closest being Mercury, and is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty.  However, although Venus and Earth were formed out of the same nebula (which is a mass of interstellar dust and gas out of which stars and planets are believed to be formed) and Venus is classified as a terrestrial, or earth-like planet, the two planets are very different.
